In present day Italy, a group of elderly hunters gather to eat, drink and ponder the local legend of Luciano, a down-and-out drunkard in a 19th-century village whose budding romance with a sheepherder’s daughter leads to an unexpected journey of redemption in the plains of Tierra del Fuego. Matteo Zoppis and Alessio Rigo de Righi’s The Tale of King Crab blends oral tradition, folklore, magical realism, and Western aesthetics into an unforgettable parable on identity.
Guest curator Oscilloscope Laboratories shares: “The Tale of King Crab is a film that defies temporality. We know it was made in 2021, but if 100 years from now an unmarked copy is pulled from a time capsule, those aliens won’t know if it was from 1963, 1973, 1983, 19…you get the point.”
Join us for a live screening of this gorgeously composed adventure, an official selection of the 2021 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, followed by a chat with the filmmakers.
