In 2002 a group of Dalit women founded a newspaper. Khabar Lahariya remains the only female-run and female-staffed news outlet in India. In the documentary Writing with Fire, directors Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas go behind the scenes as the staff transitions from print to digital, documenting their investigations into local injustices as the team trains a new generation of women reporters to navigate a patriarchal system designed to oppose them. In uncertain times for marginalized communities, Writing with Fire is an empowering ode to determination and bravery in the face of adversity.
Following a live screening, Ghosh and Thomas will join us to detail their process of crafting the first Indian documentary feature to be nominated for an Academy Award.
